ABOUT THE OWNER
Karen Klein, MA, ELS, MWC
I served as President of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) in 2014-2015, and have decades of experience in editing manuscripts and biomedical grant applications. I began my career at The New England Journal of Medicine. Since then I have worked at other medical journals, a consumer health magazine, and academic medical centers. I have read and edited over 3,000 grant proposals, mostly to the NIH, of many types and on a wide range of subjects. I have special expertise in training grants (NIH K's and T's) and large and complex applications (Center grants, Program Projects, CTSAs). I am certified by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences, and am a Medical Writer Certified. I have reviewed proposals for PCORI and Susan Komen for the Cure. Most importantly, I am passionate about the importance of clear writing in biomedical science.
SERVICES
EDITING GRANT PROPOSALS
My clients say I treat their applications as if they were my own. I put at their disposal my familiarity with NIH, other federal agencies, and foundation funders to help them craft the best possible application. I consider both the "forest" (how the overall idea fits with the funder's goals) and the "trees" (how a proposal can best express the investigators' ideas). In this challenging funding environment, every detail matters and a poorly written proposal will not be competitive. My clients consider me part of their team, and I give their work the polish that helps them get funded. In the last 4 years, I've teamed with investigators to win over $94 million in awards.
MANUSCRIPT EDITING
I began my career at the New England Journal of Medicine, and then worked at two other major medical journals. I have coauthored peer-reviewed papers in journals such as JAMA, and have over 30 years of experience as a board-certified author's editor. This broad experience gives me a unique advantage in editing manuscripts for timely acceptance in high-impact journals. Publishing is essential for getting research grants, and funded research needs to be disseminated to have impact. Clarus can help with both of these essential metrics of scientific success.
CONSULTING and WORKSHOPS
I work with clients to map strategies for success. Whether it's deciding which funders to approach for research support, which types of funding programs to apply to, or which journals to target for manuscript submissions, my experience is at my clients' disposal so they can achieve their goals.
I teach workshops on proposal and manuscript writing from a strategic perspective. I help applicants use "grantsmanship", think like reviewers of applications and manuscripts, and incorporate fresh perspectives in their writing.
TESTIMONIALS
What My Clients Have to Say
Any grant or publication success I have enjoyed or will enjoy in the future, I give you so much of the credit. Your attention to detail and ability to turn something that started out as a dud into a work of art is amazing.
Your effort, skill, responsiveness, positivity, and overall willingness to help in any way possible has come to be expected, but I wanted to let you know how much we appreciate it.
Once again, you stepped forward with your understated excellence to support the largest research grant in our history. There is no component of a grant more important than clarity of thought and word, aligned with a beautiful architecture. Your input into these elements has and always will be very special and absolutely essential.
Karen Klein is an absolute treasure. This is not hyperbole. Her service is essential and superb.
I have been lucky enough to have benefited from Karen's expertise and services over the past 9 years. Karen is a joy to work with and a unique treasure at our institution. She recently assisted me on a grant submission that might not have made the deadline without her editorial efforts.
Thank you for being such a great colleague, mentor, coach, and advocate.
